Well-know resident shot in house attack

Date: 15 October 2009

A well-known and years long resident of Broederstroom is still in the intensive care unit of a Pretoria Hospital after she and her husband were attacked outside their home late last Thursday night. The 58 year old Farida Jalalpor has undergone reconstructive surgery to her shattered jaw after she was shot in the face during the attack.

Mr. Ahmed Jalalpor (58), developer of the Mountain Lake shopping centre in Broederstroom and whose family has lived in Broederstroom since 1906, said that he and Farida had returned home between 22:15 and 22:30 on Thursday night and noticed that the security guard on duty was not the same one as always but did not think anything was wrong. “As usual, we gave the guard the key and he opened the gate for us. We drove in and parked the car and as we were on our way to the house three men with pistols attacked us. They pushed me and I fell over. I was worried about Farida and when I turned around to look for her I saw one man bending over her and heard a shot being fired,” Jalalpor said. According to him they have a shopping basket that they usually carry with them with their purchases of the day and their backdoor key in it. The robbers grabbed only the basket and fled from the scene.Jalalpor said that he then saw that Farida had been shot behind the ear and he called for help. The Necsa Emergency Service responded and took Farida to the Eugene Marais Hospital in Pretoria. He said that they later heard that the group of robbers had arrived at their house earlier during Thursday evening and that they had overpowered the security guard and took his uniform and then waited for them to return. According to Jalapor the police later recovered the basket with the backdoor key still in it in the veld not far from the house. He told Kormorant that Farida’s condition is improving but that she is still in the Intensive Care Unit of the same hospital. Jalalpor said that the doctors had started with reconstructive surgery on Farida’s jaw on Friday. According to him he had only sustained a bump to the head and he assumed that this happened when he fell to the ground. Jalalpor thanked the members of the emergency services as well as the members of the community for their support after the incident. Capt. Aafje Bothma, a North West SAPS police spokesperson, confirmed the incident and said that it seems that the group of six robbers had arrived at the house on the small holding in Broederstroom earlier during Thursday evening and had confronted the guard with a firearm and then took his uniform. The group then allegedly waited for the couple to return home and attacked them. She said that the Hartbeespoort police are investigating charges of armed robbery and attempted murder.
